A night out in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. One man lost his life and the other his freedom.
But was it murder?
In 2009 a Bulgarian court found young Australian Jock Palfreeman guilty of murder and sentenced him to twenty years.
Palfreeman always said he’d gone to the assistance of a Gypsy who he claimed was being beaten up by about fifteen young men. He said he pulled out a knife when the attack then turned on him.
Walkley award winning ABC Australian Story journalist Belinda Hawkins produced two TV episodes on the story and has spent the past four years investigating the case. She has now written a book about it. Published by Allen and Unwin, Every Parent’s Nightmare is at once a murder mystery, a love story and a look at what a parent will do to get justice for a child.
Join Belinda Hawkins and eminent criminal barrister Tom Percy QC as they explore the case, the characters and the lessons to be learnt.

‘Wrong place, wrong time, wrong person.
The horrifying story of what went wrong for Jock Palfreeman when he was just trying to help a stranger.’
